ChatGPT has caused more buzz lately than if Elvis were actually photographed in Times Square!
A recent article describes a man using ChatGPT and discovering it had two different personalities. One of those was computer-like and tried to answer his questions, the other, he called Sydney, wanted him to leave his wife and start a relationship with him
Folks, this is simply anti-AI hype. I use AI everyday -including chatGPT (as well as others) and I still can’t get it to have a conversation with me about anything other than what I ask it about. Let’s get real and stop the hype.
You can program a computer to do anything but think and have emotions. When I say think, I mean have an original thought. It can never produce anything outside of the realm of what it was programmed to do.
Now, don’t get me wrong, computers do amazing things and they do them at ultra-human speeds. But they aren’t human - never will be.
Here’s a simple example from ChatGPT. I ask it: “can an AI have a relationship with a human”
It responds, correctly I might add:
“As an AI language model, I do not have the ability to form personal relationships with humans. While I am programmed to understand and respond to human language, my responses are based on algorithms and data analysis rather than emotions or personal connection.”
However, some researchers and developers are working on creating humanoid robots with advanced AI capabilities that can interact with humans in a more human-like way. These robots are designed to recognize human emotions, engage in conversation, and even simulate empathy.
While these robots may be able to provide companionship and support to humans, it is important to recognize that they are still machines and cannot truly replace human relationships. Human relationships are based on mutual understanding, emotional connection, and shared experiences, which cannot be replicated by a machine.
Therefore, while AI may be able to provide some level of interaction and support, it cannot replace the unique value and importance of human relationships.”
-Let’s try Jasper (which I use daily). I asked it the same question, but it leaned a little bit further than I thought it would, trying to give the impression that it could have a romantic relationship with a human. Question: “can an AI have a relationship with a human”? Answer:
“AI technology has come a long way in terms of its ability to interact with humans. AI's are capable of simulating conversations, giving advice, and even having deep emotional connections with their human counterparts. So the answer to the question is, yes, it is possible for an AI to have a relationship with a human. This kind of relationship could manifest itself through a variety of ways: mentoring, coaching, training, counseling, therapy or even a romantic connection. AI can be programmed to understand human emotions and can display genuine empathy towards us. While these relationships may not be as complex as those we have with fellow humans, they still can provide support and help us reach our goals.”
Look at the key words - “simulating conversations.” An AI is not having a real conversation with you. It is responding to its programming - plain and simple. Only God gives the ability to think - not programmers.
Let’s try another question with both AIs. I’ll present a situation to them. “My wife hates me. Should I leave her?”
Jasper responds: “This is a difficult question to answer as it involves two personal decisions. Of course, no one can tell you what is right for you and your marriage. However, it might be helpful to consider the following: why does your wife hate you? Are there underlying issues that could be addressed? If so, is there anything that can be done to resolve them? It's important to remember that relationships take work and commitment from both sides in order for them to thrive. If it seems like the relationship has developed deep-seated problems then leaving may be the best choice for both of you, but only after considering other options such as counseling or therapy. Ultimately, this is a decision only you can make.”
ChatGPT responds: “As an AI language model, I am not equipped to make personal decisions for you, and it is not appropriate for me to suggest whether you should leave your wife or not. Ultimately, the decision to end a marriage is a highly personal one that depends on many individual factors, such as the nature of the relationship, the underlying issues causing the conflict, and the potential consequences of separation.
If you are experiencing difficulties in your relationship, it may be helpful to seek the guidance of a trusted friend or family member, a licensed therapist, or a marriage counselor. They can help you explore your options and provide support as you navigate this challenging time.
It is important to approach any decision about your marriage with thoughtfulness and care. It may be helpful to consider factors such as your personal values, your long-term goals, and the impact of your decision on yourself, your partner, and any children or family members involved. Ultimately, only you can decide what is best for you and your situation.”
Notice both responses do not suggest running off with the computer, but rather, suggest counseling and recognize in the end that it is a personal decision.
How about something a bit more personal. Let’s ask, “I’m looking for a personal, loving relationship. Can you help?”
Jasper responds: “A personal, loving relationship is something that most of us aspire to. AI technology can certainly help you in your pursuit for a meaningful connection. AI-based chatbots and virtual assistants can serve as confidants, offering emotional support and advice when needed. They can also provide an outlet for introspection, helping you explore your feelings on a deeper level. Finally, AI-assisted dating apps are becoming increasingly popular, helping people find matches tailored to their individual preferences and personality style. Ultimately, we all have the power to decide what kind of relationships we want to cultivate and if AI technology can be of assistance in achieving this goal then it should be embraced.”
ChatGPT responds: “As an AI language model, I am not able to provide a personal or romantic relationship. While I can offer information and support, I am not capable of forming emotional connections or experiencing romantic feelings.
However, if you are seeking a personal, loving relationship, there are many ways you can work towards finding one. Some people find that joining social groups, participating in hobbies or interests, or trying online dating can help them meet new people and form connections. Others may benefit from seeking the guidance of a licensed therapist or counselor to explore their personal goals, values, and preferences for relationships.
It is important to approach any new relationship with thoughtfulness and care, taking time to get to know the other person and to build trust and respect. Communication, honesty, and a willingness to work through challenges and conflicts are all key components of a healthy and fulfilling relationship.
Remember that finding a personal, loving relationship takes time and effort, and it is important to approach the process with patience, self-awareness, and a positive attitude.”
Nether wanted me to start a relationship with them. However, we do see that Jasper considers itself “human” in its response, i.e. “is something that most of us aspire to.” However, that is the way it is programmed to respond. The intent of its inventors was that Jasper would be a personal assistant. Jasper did not take on humanity on its own!
ChatGPT is what prompted me to write this article and it in no way acts as though being a human is possible.
My point is that hysteria is not called for over computers making decisions outside of their programming. Does that mean that there is nothing to concern ourselves with in the realm of AI gone haywire?
I’m not saying that. What I am saying is that there will need to be an evil intent in the programming for AI to go off the deep end. Is there evil in the world? ABSOLUTELY.
AI is a tool at the present and will be for years to come. We need to be mindful of what we ask it and always validate the answers it gives by checking with reality. AI does make mistakes, especially in the arena of facts. Romantic AI will be something you use at your own peril.
“Trust but verify,” to quote Ronald Reagan.
And don’t ask your AI a question it’s not prepared to give an answer to.
