The Trial of Alec Murdaugh
Only 1 thing needed by Alec to go scott-free for the murders - he didn't have it!
(I wrote this hours before the jury reached a verdict - which they did quickly)
I have watched almost the entirety of the trial and it is a story of pure evil dressed in a suit.
From station 19 WLTX
The trial was long-winded, to say the least. Day after day of testimony by witnesses from the State and the Defense: The state showing Alec to be a pathological liar, and the defense trying to say, “Hey he’s going to jail forever for his financial crimes, why not let that be enough?”
The turning point against Alec came early in the trial. The video on Paul’s phone. After listening to the video, everyone that knew Alec well, identified him as being in kennels within 10-15 minutes of the murders. Folks, that was it for me. Of course, I’m not a lawyer and I know you can’t have a 15 minute trial and say, “prove that you weren’t there when the murders happened.”
That’s called presumption of innocence.
That applies to anyone except Donald Trump and those evil MAGA followers (I know, I know. I digress)
So, with the burden of proving guilt on the shoulders of the State - the trial began.
Apparently, at some point before I started watching, the Defense had worked out some deal where the State was restricted from using Alec’s propensity to steal every dollar he could from his law firm and their clients, an obvious character flaw as a minimum, as a representation of his character and therefore a probable cause that he could kill his wife and son.
Well, at some point in the trial - while I was actually watching - the Defense raised an objection to that effect and the judge correctly stated - the defendant’s character is pertinent to the case. The judge actually said it much better than I could, but that was all I could remember.
So on it went. Alec stole this money, Alec stole that money. Alec stole from good friends and people he didn’t know. Alec lied to his friends and family while he stole from them.
Alec was a drug addict.
Alec was knee-deep in debt.
That was the real problem and that is what we need to look at.
Why would he kill his wife and son? Even when you listen to the main thought process of the State: he did it to draw sympathy for himself and divert attention away from his financial shenanigans - it still seems so unbelievable that someone could do that to their wife and son.
Folks, I watch YouTube reels of police tapes all the time - including interviews of the murderers. When you see how many sons and daughters kill their mothers and fathers, you get jaded. When you see how many husbands and wives kill each other to get out of a bad relationship, you get jaded. Nothing seems out of the question any longer.
And it isn’t.
My contention is that Alec either did it or had it done while was there. But the more the trial went on and I was introduced to the devil in a suit, I believe he did it himself.
He was broke.
He couldn’t afford to pay anyone to do it.
His life as a respected (semi-respected/hated) member of Hampton County was rapidly coming to an end.
He couldn’t fix it through normal means, so once again he had to take drastic measures. And he did.
As the testimony against him built up, it became obvious that the only person that mattered in Alec Murdaugh’s life was Alec. Yes, he bawled like a baby every time they showed photos and gave testimony concerning the details of the murders. But I think he’s just realizing the totality of his selfish existence.
I believe he did love his wife and son. Just not as much as he loved himself. He would do anything to avert the disgrace that was already coming at him like a freight train.
He couldn’t think of anything else that would work. He needed a diversion. He was a prosecutor. He knew how the trial would work and he did everything in his power to set up the scenario to look like he didn’t do it.
But he missed the most important detail - the video in Paul’s phone that placed Alec at the crime scene 10 minutes before the murder. Alec only needed to do 1 thing to win this case.
Not be on the scene of the murder when it happened.
The defense tried all the carnival activity they could muster, but once Alec admitted that the voice on the video - taken 10 minutes before the murder was his - nothing else could save him.
He needed to be anywhere but on the Moselle property on the evening of June 7th 2022. He wasn’t. He was right there. The jury should be left with only one option: murder in the first degree.
But he’s not worried. Appeals, delays, monied friends. Those will still come to his rescue. I just don’t think it will be enough - IF - justice ever comes to town.
